"When are you interviewing the Haim sisters?" a message arrives. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."

There's just a single issue: The sender also wants to be the Haims' additional sibling. And we're not alone. Multiple high-profile admirers have publicly coveted the role.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their path performing shows at local delicatessens with their family. Today, they are multiple Grammy hopefuls.

Like all the most iconic ensembles, they're a close unit. Their visuals often feature them marching in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such boundless happiness you can't help but think, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That is the ultimate honour. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire others to form a group."

"And thus everyone is invited to be the fourth Haim sister."

Grammy Nod

The trio are connecting from home, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," notes Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the honor resonates with the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant milestone," adds Alana. "But we're just grateful for the women that inspired us."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The album was born from a time of transition. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that odd transitional period where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to start anew.

The lyrics track endings and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them determining in the moment who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a mantra. You have to actively work on ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Style

That newfound resilience required a new sound – more unpolished and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," jokes Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Laughter

The band's honesty inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic horror stories.

One man left Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Legacy

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their standing in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide audience.

But Haim will always be their number one priority.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was little," concludes Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
