The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
