Weather experts have indicated an icy start to the new year, with wintry precipitation anticipated across much of the UK. Those celebrating are being urged to bundle up as bitterly cold temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.
Celebratory Events Go Ahead Despite Forecasts
Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay festivities are set to take place, following last year's postponement. This proceeds amid weather alerts for snow in northern Scotland.
"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those partying, so extra layers will be needed," stated the national forecaster.
Celebrations Under Mostly Clear but Frosty Skies
Across the UK, the weather is set to be ideal for fireworks shows, with dry conditions and good visibility. Readings are due to be chilly, making additional clothing vital, said forecasters.
To the north, skies will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to impact visibility for seeing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.
Widespread Snow Warnings for New Year's Day
Heading into Friday, advisories are in place for Northern Ireland and from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.
- Travel is expected to be affected.
- The public should to allow extra time for journeys on the road.
- Delays and cancellations are likely on the transport network.
Temperatures Set to Plummet Even More
As 2026 begins, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are forecast to drop further as snowfall and high winds are predicted to batter the north of the country.
Around 10cm of snow could accumulate to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.
Medical Advisories Activated
In addition, amber cold health alerts have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to continue until noon on 5 January, with temperatures forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.
The health agency explained this signified the weather was expected to cause notable consequences across medical and care provision. This includes a likely increase in the fatality numbers among those with health conditions or those in the older age groups.
The guidance for all is clear: to see the new year in good health, dressing for the cold is utterly essential.
