New research reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users buying these medications must be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a reversion to original mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Doctors suggest the way of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have come off the medication explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you become ravenous," recalled an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural support.
