WHO Issues Concern Over Acute Scarcity of Weight-Loss Jabs

Under a tenth of patients who could benefit from GLP-1 drugs such as Wegovy can access them, states the WHO as it releases its inaugural recommendations on the therapies.

With more than one billion individuals worldwide now classified as obese, it is advocating for increased and just availability to this class of drugs.

Per projections, in excess of 2,000,000,000 will be obese by 2030 unless action is taken.

"Our new guidelines affirms that obesity is a chronic disease that can be managed with comprehensive and continuous care," said WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, limited production capacity, and distribution challenges are major obstacles to widespread availability to the jabs that can help people shift substantial body mass, explains the agency.

Skinny Jab Scarcity

Despite the present most optimistic case, the production of GLP-1 therapies might only reach around 100 million people – less than 10% of the global need, as stated by the WHO.

The advice urges countries and companies to widen availability, via approaches including voluntary licensing.

A patent on a key compound – the main ingredient of a leading brand – is due to expire in a number of nations in 2026.

How Weight-Loss Injections Work

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone to delay gastric emptying, curb appetite and enhance the sense of being full so users consume fewer calories.

Patients commonly begin shedding pounds after several weeks of beginning the regular doses.

Research suggests people may see weight return a year later of discontinuing the treatment, as their usual appetite come back.

To be overweight or obese increases your likelihood for developing medical conditions, like type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular issues, brain attack, and certain malignancies.

Excess weight affects people in every country and was linked to over three and a half million fatalities worldwide in 2024, as per the health agency.
