Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had let his message to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, following Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, he said his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special entering this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need four wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of play – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
